Temperatures soared above 40 degrees Celsius on Friday, with strong winds exacerbating a bushfire burning east of Esperance in Western Australia. Three firefighters were caught in a burnover while battling the blaze, sustaining minor injuries and smoke inhalation. Their truck caught fire north-west of Esperance Friday afternoon. The Esperance Shire reported the fire ignited at Dalyup, 32 kilometers west of Esperance , around 2:30 p.m. The bushfire has scorched approximately 1,500 hectares.
The injured firefighters were transported to Esperance Hospital for treatment. Acting Esperance Shire President Jennifer Obourne expressed relief that the firefighters were reunited with their families. She commended their bravery, stating that first responders consistently risk their lives for the community. An Esperance Shire spokesperson echoed the sentiment, expressing immense gratitude for the firefighters' safety and acknowledging the dedicated efforts of the Bush Fire Brigade and Esperance Emergency Support Unit volunteers. At its peak, 17 fire appliances and 51 firefighters were deployed to combat the blaze, which prompted an emergency warning. The fire ignited near the intersection of Murray Road and Telegraph Road as Esperance experienced a scorching high of 41.3 degrees Celsius. An Advice warning remained in effect for residents in the area between Dalyup River and McCall Road in Dalyup, as the fire slowly moved south. Fire crews remained on scene, with road closures implemented on Telegraph Road, Bates Road North, and Chartwell Lane
