An automatic fine is issued by the tax office if you miss a filing or payment date, even if you do not need to pay any taxes
One of the most common fines handed out by HMRC was overturned in a massive 73% of cases after it was challenged by taxpayers
However almost three quarters of these were successfully challenged. Official figures showing that HMRC looked at 3,807 automatic fines in the second quarter of last year after individuals challenged them. Of these 2,755 were cancelled and 24 were reduced, meaning that taxpayers had a 73% success rate when they challenged the fines, the Times reports.
However there are a range of excuses for self-assessment delay HMRC can accept such as computer failures, HMRC online crashes, unexpected hospital stays, the recent death of a partner and fires. You will be charged interest on late payments and HMRC recommends paying the penalty even if you intend to appeal, so that if your appeal is rejected you’ll have to pay interest from the date it was due, regardless of your appeal.
