The first major outbreak of spring thunderstorms is firing up this week across parts of Queensland and New South Wales, bringing with them threats of the destructive supercell storm.
The first spell of spring thunderstorms arrived this week, with a risk of the rare and destructive supercell storm on the cards for south-east Queensland and northern NSW.
Today's storm risk includes the chance of rotating supercells, the rarest and most intense category of thunderstorm, capable of producing destructive winds, giant hail and torrential rain.Atmospheric conditions across eastern Australia this week are typical for the beginning of the severe weather season which runs from October to April.
Later in the afternoon a storm just north of Brisbane soaked Beerburrum with a 41mm deluge in just 20 minutes. Supercells are the least common storm type but the most dangerous, and typically bring a combination of torrential rain, destructive winds, hail and occasionally tornadoes. There are four main thunderstorm types, with supercell being the most powerful and responsible for the majority of storm damage.Regular thunderstorms have a limited life span as the storm's updraft, which supplies moisture and energy for cloud development, is obstructed by the downdraft, which contains the rain.
