A big weather change is looming for parts of New South Wales but meteorologists have warned warm and muggy conditions will continue amid the ongoing heatwave.

Parts of NSW are bracing for"severe" thunderstorms with possible large hail and damaging winds while temperatures remain high and muggy as heatwave conditions continue.

Picture: NewsWire / Nikki Short "The risk of storms today firmly over eastern and central NSW," Osborne said during her Thursday forecast."As with all thunderstorm outbreaks, it will be hit or miss, but the risk is pretty broad for flash flooding particularly through Sydney, the Illawarra, parts of the Central Coast and Hunter, and all the way through to the Central West.

Meteorologist at the national weather agency, Miriam Bradbury, said Sydney is a"key area of risk" for thunderstorm activity on Thursday. "We are likely to see severe storms across the Sydney metro area today and across broader parts of the Central Coast, the Illawarra and Hunter and the Central Tablelands," she said. "Some of that flash-flooding that impacted Melbourne yesterday and we could see gusty winds as the system moves through and that combination of winds and rain can be damaging.
