Tigers to sacrifice $100,000 to give Benji Marshall a Leichhardt farewell | MichaelChammas SMHsport
Wests Tigers are willing to sacrifice close to $100,000 to pay tribute to Benji Marshall by moving their final game of the season from Bankwest Stadium to provide the departing five-eighth with a Leichhardt Oval farewell.
The NRL will lock in the venues for the final two rounds of the season on Monday, with the Tigers scheduled to play their home game against Parramatta in round 20 at Bankwest Stadium.
The Tigers have opened conversations with Bankwest Stadium officials, who have expressed a willingness to hand over the final-round fixture as a mark of respect to Marshall, with the NRL also on board with the mooted venue change.Given the COVID-19 restrictions in place in NSW, Bankwest Stadium is capable of holding about 7500 fans, however about 3200 will only be allowed in to Leichhardt Oval.
The move will also provide the club with the opportunity to send off Marshall with one of his best friends, the retiring Chris Lawrence, who is likely to be given a Leichhardt swansong despite not featuring in the side since the round 13 loss to Newcastle.
