Editorial: The Coalition's virtue signalling on prudent use of taxpayer funds is being challenged by revelations about rampant employer rorting of the JobKeeper subsidy
reported on Monday that the Australian Tax Office had notified about 8000 businesses that they may have to repay money because they do not seem to be eligible for the scheme.
The ATO has a large team auditing the payments but it needs to follow up with enforcement for businesses that have done the wrong thing". So far not one employer has been penalised. The listed companies paying bonuses while accepting JobKeeper may not be technically breaking the rules but they have a moral obligation to be prudent with taxpayer money.the federal government was probably correct to start winding it back, hopefully ensuring it is reaching those most in need.
