An accidental time capsule offering a snapshot into life in Fremantle 100 years ago has been uncovered beneath the floorboards of its Town Hall. Show tickets, programs, bottlecaps, projector reels, cigarette packets and sweets wrappers were recently discovered by workers during a bid to revitalise the concert venue’s balcony, first opened in 1887 in the port city. The items are currently being assessed and catalogued for preservation by the City of Fremantle’s history team.
“We just managed to get basically one scene of it, which just gives you the title of the film they were presenting,” he said. “It’s pretty much the earliest thing we can see on there; there may be a couple of earlier things on there, maybe the bottletop.” Clippings from The Daily News confirm the five-reel film was played at Fremantle’s Town Hall in December, 1917.
