The YBA's territory has always been a blokey world of innuendos and off-colour jokes. But in this show, her subject is cruelty - and it's not funny in the slightest
Sarah Lucas: Happy Gas, Tate Britain, review: Toilets, dildos, fags and boobs – the YBA is still perverse
Lucas is now 60 and has not lost her relish for sexual innuendo – concrete sculptures of giant marrows on the lawn outside Tate Britain herald the artist’s show there. Rather than cramming her work so far into four galleries, she’s selected a typically perverse theme.focusses largely on work involving chairs, from burnt-out car seats to a suspended “egg” chair covered in little breasts to a cast of the dancer Michael Clark sitting on a toilet.
It was and remains easy to read Lucas wrong, to frame her as a bit of a joker. I went into the Tate show still carrying a hangover of this idea. It’s Sarah Lucas! This is going to be a laugh! And came out reminded of how brutal her work can be.The Sun
