Jian Fang Lay continues run of upsets
Lay, who has slumped to 156 in the world rankings during the COVID-19 pandemic, equalled equestrian’s Mary Hanna for most appearances at an Olympic Games by an Australian woman. It was one of the fastest races in history, with four swimmers breaking 56 seconds. The winner, Canada’s Margaret MacNeil, finished just 0.11 seconds outside Sarah Sjoestroem’s world record.
She finished 11th with 5.34 after heat three, well behind local favourite Funa Nakayama who leads going into the final heat on Monday morning.
