The unpaid role, which will involve Mr Abbott promoting the UK's trade interests across the globe, was announced late on Friday afternoon in the UK after Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave Mr Abbott his backing.there have been waves of criticism from both sides of politics in the UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said he had "real concerns" over the appointment and would not pick Mr Abbott if he were the prime minister, while Conservative MP Caroline Nokes said his appointment would be "awful"."This is such a bad idea, I'm not sure I can come up with words for how awful I think it is," she told the BBC.
Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also took aim at Mr Abbott over comments he made about COVID-19 during a speech to a London think tank on Tuesday, where he said that some older people should be allowed to die naturally."The idea that anyone would take that view is offensive and wrong," she told Sky News on Thursday."In my view, he's not the kind of person who should be a trade envoy or any kind of envoy for the United Kingdom.
