The Matildas are set to go to a World Cup on home soil with neither an Australian or a female in charge, with Football Federation Australia set to announce Swede Tony Gustavsson as the new coach of the women's national team

The Matildas are set to go to a World Cup on home soil with neither an Australian nor a female in charge, with Football Federation Australia set to announce Swede Tony Gustavsson as the new coach of the women's national team.

Sources close to the discussions suggest the 47-year-old has agreed to a four-year deal with FFA to coach the Matildas, set to be selected ahead of Australian-based Italian coach Carolina Morace and Arsenal women's Australian coach, Joe Montemurro.Getty Images The Matildas top job will be the first head coaching role with a national team for Gustavsson but is far from his first taste with international football, having held two stints as an assistant with the USA women's national team. Gustavsson was an assistant to Jill Ellis from 2014 until last year, where he was part of the USA's successful World Cup campaigns in 2015 and 2019.

FFA declined to comment on the successful candidate when contacted on Tuesday morning, however an announcement on the next Matildas' coach is set to be made within the next 24 hours. Sources involved in the hiring process suggest other candidates have been told they were unsuccessful, leaving Gustavsson as the last candidate in the race for the Matildas job.Sports news, results and expert commentary delivered straight to your inbox.
