The stabbing of a security officer at a Queensland hospital has exposed how vulnerable guards are to attacks involving edged-weapons and there are growing calls for security upgrades.
A hospital security officer at a Queensland Health facility in Townsville has been stabbed in the abdomen by a patient experiencing a medical episode.
The 42-year-old security officer at Townsville University Hospital was stabbed in the abdomen while at work late last month. "Especially due to the lack of protective equipment available to security officers and staff," an AWU spokesperson said.THHS said Queensland Police were called to the hospital about 1:30am on June 25.
"It will be alleged that staff observed the man to be in possession of a weapon," a QPS spokesperson said.Queensland public hospitals and health services develop their own local security plans to meet the security needs of the individual HHS.The alleged stabbing has prompted the AWU to call on Queensland Health and the state government to supply hospital security guards with stab-proof vests.
"These vests can directly translate to saving lives and in the hospitals they have been rolled out they've had some great success," he said. "Which is why security measures in our hospitals and health facilities meet Australian standards," the spokesperson said.
