The first-term Townsville City Council mayor has been embroiled in controversy ever since he revealed his stated military and education credentials to be false.
Townsville mayor Troy Thompson has asked the new Queensland premier to give him "a real crack" at the job he was elected to do.
The then-government also accused Cr Thompson of risking Townsville City Council staff welfare and damaging confidence in local government.
