The mayor has apologised to veterans and the Australian Defence Force, saying he wasn't able to recall details of his service history due to medical reasons.
Townsville Mayor Troy Thompson has admitted details of his military service record were falsely declared.The Crime and Corruption Commission is investigating Cr Thompson's military service record.
Cr Thompson had previously stated he served in three squadrons during a five-year stint with the Royal Australian Corps of Signals and Special Air Service in Western Australia, after enlisting in 1989.His service record was publicly called into question when Cr Thompson was unable to provide his service number when questioned by media in April."Those who know me know that I've had multiple concussions – 100-plus — and I suffer from epilepsy," Cr Thompson told Channel Nine.
"I probably didn't say it right pre-election, but I certainly spent some time with people from SAS. I'd never purport to be a soldier of the SAS."Cr Thompson told Channel Nine he would not be sharing the details of his service record, despite saying it would be made public.
