At various stages Millie Bright looked set for a career in equestrian and as a centre-forward. This is her route to the England captaincy
Perhaps it all starts when she moved to Chelsea, in a midfield with Katie Chapman and Ji So-yun, or when she found her favoured position with the subsequent move to a back three. Probably, it began even before then.
Esberger muses that Bright “was trying out the horse career a little bit” but was more enamoured with football. “I don’t know how torn she was, really. I think football was always her real drive,” Esberger says. “This industry is hard — you need to get a bit of a name and a reputation before you can earn. I remember thinking, ‘Girls’ football? How are you going to make a living doing that?’. I wanted to encourage her to carry on her football, but I was thinking that was more of a hobby.
Spells in midfield meant she found herself a direct opponent of England legend Jill Scott, then at Everton. “It was so funny after the game,” begins Buckley. “I was doing the press conference. Jill Scott was sat across from me and she was doing one. She was saying: ‘The girl I played against tonight, that young girl — she’s the most aggressive player I’ve ever played against.’ But that was Millie.
Chelsea, though, returned, this time with increased conviction that Bright was their missing link. They had started the final day of the 2014 season in first place, two points ahead of second-placed Birmingham and with a three-point cushion over third-placed Liverpool. A 2-1 defeat by Manchester City, coupled with Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Bristol City, sent the title to Merseyside.
