A former NT Labor minister and head of the Northern Land Council, John Ah Kit is being remembered as a 'leader and advocate for Aboriginal people' and a man with a remarkable sense of humour.
Key points:His family described him as a "leader and advocate" for Aboriginal peopleIn a statement, Mr Ah Kit's family said he died at Royal Darwin Hospital on Sunday night.
In the late 1980s, he worked with Aboriginal elders as part of a negotiating team to secure a site in Kakadu National Park to be protected from further exploration or mining. "There's no way, as an Aboriginal kid growing up in the Parap Camp, that I could even have contemplated becoming a parliamentary representative," he said.
"I've never been one to be known to go into things half-hearted, I've worked flat out for the last 25 years and all that builds up.
