, and rail workers over its wage offer for public servants amid surging inflation.
The Australian Workers’ Union, which has about 800 members at Transport for NSW, said workers would walk off the job for the first time in decades because they were outraged at the offer, which amounted to a cut in their real wages. Transport workers from 69 depots across NSW plan to gather outside the front gates of major depots at 9am on Thursday, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge depot and Civic Park in Newcastle.AWU state branch organiser Cameron Wright said the workers did not take industrial action lightly but could only be pushed so far by the state government. “These men and women worked tirelessly to keep our state moving during recent bushfires and flood catastrophes,” he said.
Wright said the average road worker was being told to feed their family with significantly less given that inflation was increasing by more than 5 per cent.On Tuesday, Premier Dominic Perrottet said the NSW had the highest pay increases of any state in Australia for public sector workers, and the government was acting in a “fair and reasonable way”.
