Treasury advice says public sector wages freeze will 'deepen recession' | LisaVisentin
Lawyers for the state's public sector unions will attempt to force the Berejiklian government to release Treasury advice that showed halting pay rises for public servants would worsen the state's economic recession.
The existence of the advice was revealed in an April 16 email authored by NSW Treasury executive Sam Walker, which contained a "discussion pack" of policy options on the government's wages policy. In the email, disclosed under freedom on information laws, Mr Walker advises the recipients, whose names have been redacted from the document, to "please find attached pack for discussion".
"On May 27, almost six weeks later, the government announced a pause on pay rises, followed by a policy designed to achieve the maximum benefit for the people of NSW by investing an estimated $3 billion in savings to accelerate infrastructure programs designed to create jobs," Mr Tudehope said. "Otherwise he's raising suspicions that Treasury's modelling says his policy threatens to make a severe recession worse," Mr Mookhey said.
