“Over the past few days, we’ve received some lovely messages. The flag outside Sunnybank has been flying at half mast, which has been such a kind gesture from his friends at the social club."John, who was born in Nelson, was the eldest son of Douglas and Edith Tattersall. He attended Tunstead Primary School before gaining a place at Bury Grammar, taking the train through Rossendale and Ramsbottom each day.

John was a well-known and well-liked character in Stacksteads. Along with being a local shopkeeper and integral part of the community, John acted as both president and treasurer of the Rossendale Butchers Association and was an active member and secretary of the Rose and Bowl bowling club. The father-of-three enjoyed a drink at the Commercial pub and later the Rosemount social club.
