Western Australia is facing a significant risk of a tropical cyclone forming off its coast, bringing destructive wind gusts, heavy rain, and possible flooding. The Bureau of Meteorology warns that Tropical Low 18U, located north-west of Broome, is expected to move south and develop into a severe tropical cyclone later this week. The system's track and intensity remain uncertain, but it is likely to impact the Pilbara or Kimberley coast. Residents are urged to prepare for potential flooding, strong winds, and heavy rainfall.

Parts of Western Australia to be lashed with destructive wind gusts and heavy rain as 'significant' tropical cyclone risk looms

“There is still some uncertainty in the track and intensity of 18U however it seems more likely that 18U will now impact the east Pilbara or west Kimberley coast as a severe tropical cyclone later this week,” the BOM said in its latest warning on Tuesday. “So it’s a tricky system to forecast but latest modelling does suggest it’s going to move south, strengthen, become a tropical cyclone and then slow down, maybe even pause off the coast,” he said. While there is uncertainty around its movement, the system will “at some point make landfall”, and will quite possibly be a tropical cyclone, Sharpe said.

A tropical low, called 18U, is currently located to the north-west of Broome but is expected move south and develop over the next few days. Heavy rain could develop along the coast between Cape Leveque and Port Hedland during Wednesday or Thursday.
