US President Donald Trump has retaliated against Colombia's refusal to accept repatriation flights carrying migrants deported from the United States by imposing emergency tariffs, a travel ban on Colombian officials, and heightened border security measures.

Donald Trump stated that he has implemented emergency tariffs on goods and an immediate travel ban on Colombian officials following Colombia's rejection of two flights carrying migrants repatriated from the United States. As part of these sanctions, Trump has also pledged to intensify customs and border inspections for all Colombian nationals entering the United States.

President Trump made this announcement on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, asserting that Colombian President Gustavo Petro's decision had 'jeopardized' US national security. 'We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the criminals they forced into the United States,' Trump declared in his post. He outlined the imposition of 25% emergency tariffs on Colombian goods entering the US, with an escalation to 50% within a week. Furthermore, he announced a 'travel ban and immediate visa revocations on Colombian government officials, and all allies and supporters,' as well as visa sanctions targeting Colombian government party members, their families, and supporters. Trump also emphasized the implementation of heightened customs and border protection checks on Colombians and cargo entering the US. These actions follow President Petro's declaration that Colombia would not accept repatriation flights from the US until the Trump administration established a protocol treating migrants with 'dignity.' Petro expressed his stance on X, stating, 'The United States cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals. I forbid entry to our territory to US planes carrying Colombian migrants. That is why I returned the US military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants.' He further emphasized that Colombia would receive Colombians via 'civilian airplanes' and 'without treatment like criminals.
