Donald Trump has slammed French President Emmanuel Macron for calling NATO ‘brain dead’ ahead of the summit in London. 9News
Trump and Macron have had an up-and-down relationship in the nearly three years Trump's been in office.
But the relationship has been put under new stress in the aftermath of Trump pulling out US troops from Syria without coordinating with France and other NATO allies. "I'm sorry to say we don't have the same definition of terrorism around the table," Macron said in a swipe at Turkey. Trump also lashed out at France for a French digital service tax that he said unfairly discriminates against US tech companies, including Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon.
Asked if he could work with the leader of the opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, Trump said he could work with anyone.Trump also reaffirmed his support for Brexit - the central objective of Johnson's election campaign. Trump said: "We have absolutely nothing to do with it, and we wouldn't want to. If you handed it to us on a silver platter, we'd want nothing to do with it."Trump also said a trade agreement with China might have to wait until after the US presidential election in November 2020, denting hopes of a quick resolution to the dispute which has weighed on the world economy.
Washington and Beijing have yet to ink a so-called "phase one" agreement announced in October, which had raised hopes of a de-escalation in their prolonged trade war. "That's why I call him Rocket Man," Trump told reporters during a meeting with the head of NATO in London on Tuesday.North Korea fired two short-range projectiles into the sea off its east coast last week in the latest test of its large multiple-rocket launcher.
