Australia’s Islamophobia envoy Aftab Malik says Islamophobia is like one of “those hidden cancers” as it is eating away at social cohesion. Speaking on ABC’s Radio National, Malik said he had been talking to community members who say Islamophobia has been normalised in Australia. “They all say the same story that they’re in shopping malls walking around and people will say to them ‘is that a bomb that you have trapped underneath your shirt?’ And they will respond humorously, ‘no’,” Malik said.
It’s disturbing in the sense that it’s so common and nothing, apparently, has been done about this.” He said evidence showed women were the most vulnerable targets of Islamophobia, especially when they were wearing the hijab. “Unfortunately, they tend to be with toddlers or children when these take place. And what’s even sadder is that most of these Islamophobic incidents take place in very public forums. Bystanders on the main tend to look on and ignore what is occurring.
