Newly re-elected US President Donald Trump issued a strong warning to Russia, threatening to impose high tariffs and sanctions unless President Vladimir Putin agrees to a swift end to the war in Ukraine. Trump stated his willingness to engage in negotiations but made it clear that economic pressure would be used if a peaceful resolution is not reached.

Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Russia, threatening 'high levels' of tariffs and economic sanctions if President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate a swift end to the war in Ukraine. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that he would have 'no choice' but to implement these measures if a settlement is not reached between Moscow and Kyiv.

'If we don't make a 'deal,' and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries,' Trump declared. He emphasized that a resolution to the conflict is crucial, asserting that 'Let's get this war, which never would have started if I were President, over with! We can do it the easy way, or the hard way — and the easy way is always better.'Trump's threat comes after he repeatedly asserted during his presidential campaign that he could end the war within 24 hours of assuming office. While his administration's timeline appears to be closer to 100 days, according to his designated Ukraine peace envoy, Keith Kellogg, the message is clear: economic pressure will be used to compel negotiations. Trump attempted to soften the blow by expressing his affection for the Russian people and his past good relationship with Putin, stating, 'I'm not looking to hurt Russia. I love the Russian people, and always had a very good relationship with President Putin.' He added, 'All of that being said, I'm going to do Russia, whose Economy is failing, and President Putin, a very big FAVOR. Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War!' Russia's response has been cautious, with deputy U.N. Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy indicating that Moscow needs to understand what Trump considers a 'deal' to end the war. He emphasized that addressing the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis is paramount, stating, 'It's first and foremost the question of addressing root causes of Ukrainian crisis.' Polyanskiy also acknowledged Trump's lack of responsibility for US actions in Ukraine since 2014 but urged him to halt what Moscow perceives as a 'malicious policy.'Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has outlined his conditions for a peace agreement, stating that it would require at least 200,000 European peacekeepers to prevent a renewed Russian offensive. He also rejected any proposal to significantly reduce Ukraine's armed forces, dismissing the notion of scaling back to a fifth of its current size. The situation remains volatile, with the international community closely monitoring developments and urging all parties to engage in constructive dialogue
