Former President Donald Trump called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, warning of significant economic consequences if the conflict continues. Trump stated his intention to impose high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on Russian goods if a 'deal' is not reached promptly.
Donald Trump has urged Vladimir Putin to 'make a deal' to end the Russia-Ukraine war, warning of high taxes, tariffs, and sanctions if the conflict persists. Trump, in his second full day back in the White House, is putting pressure on global conflicts to find resolution, following the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
The former president took to Truth Social, stating that he 'was not looking to hurt Russia' and had a 'very good relationship' with Putin, but that it was time to 'make a deal.' 'We must never forget that Russia helped us win the Second World War, losing almost 60,000,000 lives in the process. All of that being said, I’m going to do Russia, whose Economy is failing, and President Putin, a very big FAVOR,' Trump wrote. 'IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. If we don’t make a “deal,” and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.' Trump claimed the conflict would have never escalated if he was still president, advocating for a 'deal' to prevent further loss of life. He, however, did not specify which countries he considered 'participants' or how he defined their involvement. While the US has imposed extensive sanctions on Russia under President Biden, targeting various sectors of the Russian economy, Russian Deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy responded that Moscow will need to understand Trump's definition of a 'deal' to end the war. He emphasized that addressing the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis is paramount. The US imports from Russia have significantly declined since the invasion, with only $2.9 billion worth of goods imported through November 2024 compared to $29.6 billion in 2021. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to engage with European leaders, seeking defense and support for war-torn Ukraine
