OPINION: At one company, tugboat crews are paid not to work. When they do, they often don’t do much.

Gavin told the Newcastle duty manager at their Danish company, Svitzer, not to bother replacing either man. After all, hiring fill-ins would have cost $3000, and there was nothing for them to do. Here are some other examples cited by the company. Many of Svitzer’s 71 tugboats, at 21 ports from Geraldton to Cairns, have to be staffed with three employees for 12 hours a shift, whether or not the tugboats are used.
The union’s response: “AIMPE denies that one person in Brisbane blocks maintenance. Each engineer is responsible for the mechanical and related maintenance on the tug they are working on. In conjunction with technical management, maintenance jobs are planned and carried out in accordance with the planned maintenance system for each tug.
