Police have arrested two men accused of stealing a car with a sleeping toddler in the back seat, after an appeal for information from the public.
A Melbourne father had left his car for a few minutes to buy an ice cream for his two-year-old son in Chelsea on Sunday afternoonPassersby found the distraught young boy standing on the side of a nearby busy street shortly after the incident. The child was crying and wearing only a nappy when he was found.
On Tuesday, detectives from the Moorabbin crime investigation unit swooped into Frankston Shopping Centre to arrest an 18-year-old man from Narre Warren and a 20-year-old from Clarinda just after midday.Police say the men are assisting them with the investigation. Officers are yet to find the stolen car.
Acting senior sergeant Grant Lewis said on Monday the thief probably didn’t realise the child was sleeping in the car and dropped him off nearby to avoid more serious charges. “I prefer that the child be put on the side of the road than remain with an offender driving fast and erratically in the car,” Lewis said. “But that doesn’t endorse or absolve him of any responsibility.”He said the incident, which he described as brazen and terrifying, had left the father “very traumatised”.The boy’s father, Jake, told Channel Nine the ordeal had been horrifying.
