Two Japanese schoolboys have been found dead at a lake on Queensland's Fraser Island in what has been described as a tragic accicdent.

The two 16-year-olds drowned at Lake McKenzie, an iconic tourist spot, overnight, police said. The boys, both Japanese nationals, were reported missing from the group near Lake McKenzie just after 5pm on Friday.

Jeff Ellison from Sealink, which owns the Kingfisher Bay Resort at Fraser Island, said a search party had gone out as soon as the boys did not return to the tour bus."It was a tragic accident and a terrible situation. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the boys," he said. The bodies of the two boys were located in water at around 8:20am Saturday morning.

Inspector Tony Clowes of the Maryborough Patrol Group said at this stage they did not believe the boys died under suspicious circumstances and could not say whether the school friends knew how to swim.“Certainly it would be confronting for all persons, including emergency services that responded."“We are in a nation surrounded by water. Be aware that if you are entering water, there is some inherent risk with entering waterways in this country,” he said.
