“In my opinion, those officers didn’t stand a chance.” An emotional press conference as Qld's Police Commissioner provides update on fatal shooting overnight.
Six people have been killed on Monday night in a confrontation between four police and three people at a Queensland property.
“Despite police efforts, the matter was unable to be resolved peacefully,” Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said on Tuesday morning. Police have paid tribute to constables Rachel McCrow, 26, and Matthew Arnold, 29, gunned down after the siege.“It is an unimaginable tragedy,” Carroll told reporters, adding that there was “considerable weaponry” on the property.Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said “they were so young, so young - they were incredibly brave”.“These are things we often hear about happening in other countries.
Authorities said a siege situation then ensued at the property - it took 16 officers to retrieve the bodies of their colleagues - and specialist police officers and PolAir responded. Gunfire could be heard in the area late on Monday night. Without naming Nathaniel Train, the commissioner said the missing person had been in contact with others but that had recently ceased, prompting police to make inquiries.
