Prime Minister Boris Johnson's controversial chief advisor has prevailed in a power struggle that has triggered the bombshell resignation of Britain's chancellor.
Johnson had invited Javid to Downing Street and asked him to stay on as chancellor but towards the end of the meeting dropped the news that he would have to purge his entire team. A row erupted and other ministers who had turned up to discover their fate were made to wait for at least an hour. The resignation - the first for a chancellor since 1989 - occurred less than a month before the Conservative Party hands down its first budget since last year's thumping general election win.
The pound jumped following the news amid expectations from investors that the change will lead to a big increase in government spending in next month's crucial budget. Thursday's long-awaited reshuffle rewarded Johnson's most loyal ministers and sidelined others who were either underperforming or not entirely supportive of the Prime Minister's legislative agenda.
