The British Ministry of Defence has launched an investigation after a 'small number' of messages meant for the Pentagon were instead sent to a Russian ally.
The MoD said a"small number" of messages were accidentally sent to the small African nation of Mali, apparently due to a typo from one of its staff.
A close ally of the Kremlin, Mali's leader, Colonel Assimi Goita, has used mercenaries from Russia's Wagner group to maintain his hold on power and is currently in St Petersburg meeting with President Vladimir Putin. "We have opened an investigation after a small number of emails were mistakenly forwarded to an incorrect email domain," the spokesperson said.
The accidental leak comes just a week on from revelations about a similar breach in the United States. Johannes Zuurbier, a Dutch internet entrepreneur, who was contracted by Mali to manage the".ml" domain, first identified the breach. Concerningly, some of the messages collected by the Dutch entrepreneur also appeared to originate from UK government accounts suggesting the"small number" of emails identified by the MoD may be larger than first thought.
