What Ukraine gets from the West in a month is barely enough to make up for its weekly military losses. The US and NATO can prolong the war, but the will of Zelenskyy's forces can't go on forever, writes strategic policy expert Dr. Alexey Muraviev.

The war is dragging on with little sign of a ceasefire and the initial optimism that Russia would quickly exhaust its resources is slowly fading away. Before the war, Ukraine's military was ranked among the strongest and most battle-hardened militaries in Europe.

There is no doubt these factors contributed to the impressive success that Kyiv showed in the first phase of the war. In addition to the US$40billion in defence aid offered by Washington, Kyiv will benefit from many billions more in support from its European allies and Canada. In the majority of cases, the Russians have actually retaken lost ground - as demonstrated recently near Kharkiv.

Their forces are also now taking more prisoners of war. According to Russia’s Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu, his military has taken nearly 6,500 Ukrainian POWs during the conflict - more than half of whom surrendered during the bitter fighting at Mariupol.Ukraine’s growing casualty toll can be explained by two factors.Second of all, Ukraine’s most professional units were largely destroyed.
