When the shells first started falling on her village, her mother was 300 kilometres away in the capital Kyiv.With train and bus networks disrupted by the fighting, and Russian forces closing in on Kyiv, there was no easy way for her to reunite with her mother. Over a three-month period, the pair attempted twice to flee almost 1,000km to Lviv in western Ukraine, and then to Krakow, Poland, where they ultimately flew to safety in Australia.
Two days later, Russian tanks rolled into the main street of her home city of Kherson and by March 2, the entire city had been occupied by Russian forces. "A lot of people were either tortured or interrogated. Interrogations became sort of an everyday thing." "I felt disgusted to be in the land of our enemy … I felt like I betrayed my people because I needed to go through their land .
More than 6 million people have been forced to leave Ukraine since Russia launched its illegal invasion in 2022, but some people have built new lives elsewhere while remaining determined to one day rebuild their homeland.
