'Residents of Watford cannot vote for the Mayor of London yet will still be profoundly affected by this tax.' dean4watford discusses the ULEZ expansion in his monthly column

In February 2021, many Greater London MPs signed my letter to the Mayor of London opposing his proposed 'Border Tax', which would have charged drivers who enter the Greater London boundary. My concern was that this was a money-grabbing scheme that would unfairly punish hard-working Watford residents to cover the London Mayor's financial failures. Fortunately, the 'Border Tax' was cancelled.

Residents of Watford cannot vote for the Mayor of London yet will still be profoundly affected by this tax. It's also disappointing that Labour, Green, and Liberal Democrat London Assembly members who supported this unfair expansion did not consider the impact on areas like Watford. Even for those who support the air-quality argument, the Mayor's own transport studies show that the proposal will do little to reduce air pollution in London.

That's why I have met with government ministers, co-signed a letter with colleagues to the Labour Mayor of London, and spoken out about this issue in Parliament on several occasions. The ULEZ expansion is essentially a tax on the constituents in Watford, and I will continue to urge the Labour Mayor of London to reconsider this unfair policy.
