Victorians struggling to afford a weekend away could be handed a lifeline after the next state election with the opposition pledging to scrap Labor’s controversial new Airbnb tax.

Victoria ns struggling to afford a weekend away could be handed a lifeline with Opposition Leader John Pesutto pledging to scrap Labor's"unfair" Airbnb tax, claiming it will add to cost-of living-pressures and harm regional businesses.

Picture: IStock“This is one of the biggest issues in the Victorian community right now, getting more and more Victorians… of buying a home where they want to live.” “Regional businesses and Victorians simply hoping to enjoy a weekend away shouldn’t be the ones to pay for Labor’s financial mismanagement and a future government I lead will scrap this tax.”

“We know that locking up many of these properties in the Airbnb process, taking them off the rental market, is making it harder for workers, for example, to be able to find a home close to where they work in rural and regional Victoria,” the Premier said. The findings sparked alarm from the Victoria Tourism Industry Council, with CEO Felicia Mariani stating that regional Victoria would be hit the hardest by the new tax, with the visitor economy contributing $10.3 billion to local communities and employing 118,700 people.
