Chris Patten, the last governor of Hong Kong, says the idea that China would become more democratic as its citizens became wealthier was delusional.
Chris Patten, former governor of Hong Kong speaking to the Foreign Press Association at the Royal Over-Seas League in London on Monday.of his time as the man appointed by the British government to oversee the transition of the colony’s administration from Britain to China, from 1992 until the handover in 1997.
He said when he was governor and criticised Beijing, including over the Tiananmen Square massacre, Beijing would reduce its imports from Britain, while increasing its exports.He said he was right to have called out the tactic early, pointing to last year’s breakdown of the trade relationship between Australia and its largest trading partner, China.
Patten said he had never believed that China’s growth would lead to more freedoms, unlike former British prime minister Tony Blair,that China was showing signs of “unstoppable momentum” towards democracy.
