“I think when you look at the fact Karen Williams was on the phone to families who had lost a loved one to drink-driving and then an hour later got in the car under the influence, that’s pretty untenable.”

Queensland MP Meaghan Scanlon has criticised Redlands Mayor Karen Williams for drinking driving and crashing her car, saying her position is “untenable” and her role on Queensland’s Olympic board could be impacted.

Labor MP Don Brown, whose electorate overlaps with Williams’, called for her resignation, and an investigation into what he described as an “after-budget party”, while Police Minister Mark Ryan said, generally speaking, “there should be consequences” for people who break the law.“I think when you look at the fact Karen Williams was on the phone to families who had lost a loved one to drink-driving and then an hour later got in the car under the influence, that’s pretty untenable,” she said.

“I think it’s good she acknowledged at least she shouldn’t have driven under the influence, but I think it’s pretty untenable to remain in that position particularly given some of the horrible things that have happened to families in her own community that she said she would advocate for.”
