Up to 2,000 firefighters are expected on be working on Christmas Day as about 80 fires continue to burn across New South Wales.

Cooler weather will ease the fire danger as rain is forecast for coastal NSW and Sydney is headed for a maximum of 26 degrees and easterly winds will move lingering haze away from the city.

There are no total fire bans and the state of emergency will be lifted on Wednesday night. The government has agreed to grant Commonwealth public service volunteers at least four-week paid leave to boost the firefighting frontline. Image: News Corp Australia
