Urbis and Cistri managing partner James Tuma reckons he almost gets more joy from working on boats than he does using them. And he has six to choose from.

ames Tuma is managing partner of urban planning consultancy Urbis and its international arm, Cistri. He lives in Brisbane.I’ve long admired wooden boats but working on them came a little later. As a boy, I accompanied my father, a marine biologist, on many boating and fishing adventures during school holidays. I recall a particular boat – a wooden trawler we spent a few days on – that seemed like an enormous playground. It had green bronze, worn old ropes, nets and the smell of wood.

Tuma and his son Henry prime a timber skiff, Little Norm, before applying anti-fouling paint. The pair had built the boat, but it was damaged in last year’s Brisbane floods.Both. I have four boats at home and two docked at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. One of the boats at home is a fast day boat called Wild Banks, designed by Brisbane’s Norman R. Wright & Sons and built by Ian Eastgate.

Teak, marine plywood, meranti, Douglas fir or carbon fibre, bronze, epoxy and plenty of paint or varnish.Yes. I adore Australian timbers for boat restoration. I have collected quite a lot over the years, focusing on Australian white beech for decking and other items that are left “raw”, and Queensland maple and silky oak for internal fit-out and cabinetry. I am also partial to silver ash for trim pieces and hardwoods like spotted gum for structural elements.
