An autopsy found that eight US police officers shot an unarmed black man 46 times, including five times in the back, when they opened fire during a traffic stop three weeks ago, a medical examiner says.

A medical examiner tallied 41 entry wounds and 5 wounds from bullets that grazed Jayland Walker The 25-year-old was shot by police last month after they attempted to pull him over for a traffic stopDuring a news conference, Summit County Medical Examiner Dr Lisa Kohler said her autopsy also determined that Jayland Walker, 25, had no drugs or alcohol in his systemDr Kohler said Mr Walker was also struck in the torso, pelvis, legs and face by gunfire when officers opened fire on him after they attempted to pull him over for a minor traffic violation and he fled. The shooting was the latest in a series of killings of black men by law enforcement in the United States that critics say are unjustified.Protesters call for police accountability Since the incident in Akron, protesters have held demonstrations in the city of about 200,000 people calling for police to be held accountable for the shooting and for justice for Mr Walker, who was buried on Thursday. The autopsy results were released a day after the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People civil rights group made a direct plea to Attorney-General Merrick Garland for the Justice Department to open a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting death. The June 27 pursuit began when officers tried to pull Mr Walker over for equipment violations. Authorities say he fired a gunshot from his car 40 seconds into the chase. After a chase of several minutes, Mr Walker jumped out of the car and ran from the officers, a video released by police showed. Police said it appeared he was turning toward officers, who at the time believed he was armed. A gun was later recovered from his car, they said. Dr Kohler said that her office did not do a gunshot residue test on Mr Walker because the test was not always reliable. It was previously reported that Mr Walker had more than 60 wounds to his body, but Dr Kohler on Friday said that some of those wounds were not from gunfire. The eight officers directly involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett said.
