One potential flashpoint is the Baltic region – which has seen rising tensions recently between Russia and NATO. If Russia launched an attack against the tiny Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, the US could respond with Assault Breaker II and 21US Air Force electronic surveillance aircraft could direct 12 B-52 heavy bombers to Russian tanks rumbling across the Baltic.

Every bomber would release 20 missiles to zero-in on Russian armoured vehicles. Just one of the missiles can eject a swarm of up to 40 mini warheads capable of hunting and destroying tanks with infrared sensors. A similar scenario could unfold against China in the Asia Pacific, though the threats here would be enemy warships and aircraft rather than ground troops.US defence chiefs think the Pentagon could have Assault Breaker II ready to deploy within 10 years. Nearly all the weaponry has been in service for years and could be fitted with new features such as self-destruct devices to prevent civilians being targeted.
