China says it will boost its nuclear stockpile to ensure “mutual assured destruction” with the US in the event of an atomic war after a report warned the communist nation will double its 200-odd warheads over a decade.

The Global Times, a Chinese government mouthpiece, responded aggressively to the Department of Defence annual report to Congress – branding it a “conspiracy to suppress China's nuclear deterrence” “Some ignorant and arrogant US politicians with strong hostility toward China might have no idea how powerful China is,” it said. “Whether China will increase its nuclear warheads depends on the extent of threat the US poses to China's national security.

” The report also raised concerns China would have “roughly 200” intercontinental ballistic missile capable of threatening the US in five years. “The anticipated changes to the capacity, capability, and readiness of China’s nuclear forces in the coming years seem likely to outpace potential developments by any adversary that could plausibly threaten China’s ability to retaliate against a first strike.
