Because of the time commitment and travel involved, Wright says it’s “almost impossible” for players to compete in both the World Cup this summer and the Tokyo Olympics next summer. The team featured only two All-Stars in Kemba Walker and Khris Middleton, and also had to deal with injuries to Marcus Smart and Jayson Tatum. That, combined with the stiff competition, led to the U.S. losing to France in the quarterfinals and then to Serbia in the classification semifinals.... [+]
Wright plans to be on Popovich’s staff in Tokyo and said he expects the team to look different from the World Cup outfit but points out that you can never really predict who will be on the team. Even though he’s lost the anonymity he enjoyed in China by being back home, at least he doesn’t have to travel to Asia again like some of the players he coached.
