Rios said he hopes his work curbs online dating frustration and makes it easier for people to make meaningful connections online. “I think that our work could help people to find better matches sooner … and hopefully help them to find long-term relationships,” he said.
Once she and Rios realized they were both interested in fine-tuning the matchmaking process, they reached out to several dating app companies to see if they’d be interested in collaborating. The history effect isn’t a brand-new concept. Someone who buys detergent the first week of July is less likely to buy it the next week at the store, since they already have enough. Similarly, someone with a good group of matches might want to spend time pursuing them instead of sending a “like” to someone new.
When a user already has a decent amount of matches, the team’s revised algorithm spaces their backlog profiles out over time, to increase the likelihood the user will send a “like” back. The dating company is testing out the team’s new algorithm to see if they can apply it to larger dating pools in cities like New York City and San Francisco.Want to check out your dating app match?
