UTSA, Texas both ready to be tested as program trajectories clash in first meeting
AUSTIN, TEXAS - SEPTEMBER 10: Bijan Robinson #5 of the Texas Longhorns scores a touchdown in the second quarter against the Alabama Crimson Tide at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on September 10, 2022 in Austin, Texas. Taking the field at Royal-Memorial Stadium in 2020, cornerback Nicktroy Fortune gazed toward the area where Texas’ sideline meets the south end zone, watching as longhorn steer Bevo idled in his pen.
But as Texas looks to return to past heights, building on the momentum of last week’s one-point loss to top-ranked Alabama, UTSA sees its own opportunity. Traylor said UTSA’s roster is “bigger and faster” than when he arrived, but the size and strength of Texas’ fronts is a different animal. With the memory still fresh, Traylor empathized with the Longhorns after seeing them stand toe to toe with “the greatest team in college football.”
“We’ve gotta be careful of the rat poison, of everyone telling us how good we are,” Sarkisian said. “A week ago, everyone told us how bad we are. Now this week, everyone wants to tell us how good we are. And we gotta be careful to quiet the noise outside of our building and focus on us, be enamored of us and focus on our preparation.”
“You know how people say we’re a team’s Super Bowl? Well, they’re our Super Bowl, too,” Robinson said of UTSA. “So we’re gonna come out there and fight hard and understand that they’re gonna bring their everything and we need to bring it right back to them. Because they had a really good season last year and they got really good players on the team.”
