Organisers of a major Christmas lights display are blaming red tape for the cancellation of their 2024 event, sparking a council stoush.

A Christmas tradition in Melbourne’s bayside has been cancelled as organisers blame council red tape for leaving them with “overwhelming” costs and insurmountable logistical hurdles.mammoth Christmas display at 63 Grange Road

Organisers get an event permit from Bayside City Council each year, and draft traffic management plans to account for the hundreds of families driving by, and people visiting on foot. However, the council never went ahead with the survey, and insisted the organisers get traffic management companies on board and all their detailed plans organised first, he said.“A traffic management consultant I spoke with had the same opinion, , ‘I need to know if changed traffic conditions in certain areas are happening or not before we can really proceed, and give you a true and accurate traffic map, and obviously, our costings associated with it’.

Its officers worked with organisers for several months to provide a safe and fun event for the community, director of environment, recreation and infrastructure Jill Colson said.
