Violence has erupted in Alice Springs where hundreds of people were involved in riotous behaviour that left buildings and cars damaged and forced workers to barricade themselves inside.

Hundreds of people gathered in Alice Springs on Tuesday allegedly carrying weapons, smashing windows and damaging cars with Mayor Matt Paterson calling for the federal government to take control of the Northern Territory.

“It was hundreds of people gathered, going through the CBD starting at one end and working their way through. “It was very frightening and I’ve got absolutely no more descriptive words to describe what we’re living in any more.”Video footage obtained by Sky News shows people running and trying to kicking in the hotel’s doors. A woman can be seen throwing rocks at the windows.Dozens of cars parked near the hotel had their windows smashed and panels damaged.

“There were a few hundred people in the CBD yesterday and they weren’t there to check the weather mate, it was very uncomfortable,” Mr Paterson said.Mr Paterson said police were hopelessly out-numbered.
