Veteran detectives Ron Iddles and Steve Waddell are at odds over whether criminal barrister Nicola Gobbo told them a suspect confessed to planning a 2003 gangland murder.

Mr Iddles told the commission that had Ms Gobbo told them that he"would have done a handstand" as it would have been the first piece of direct evidence linking the key suspect, Mark Perry, to the murder.

Just a short time earlier, his former colleague Steve Waddell stated unequivocally that the former lawyer had stated Mr Perry had confessed to her at solicitor Jim Valos's office in 2003."I was taken aback and I believe Iddles was as well," Mr Waddell told the inquiry. Mr Iddles pointed out an issue with the apparent confession, which was that it meant Mr Perry had admitted to a murder several months before it took place. The retired detective told the inquiry he never saw the completed statement until it turned up at the royal commission and he had asked other police officers and former senior prosecutor Andrew Tinney about it, who also could not recall an"alleged confession" being included in the statement.

In her statement to the royal commission, Ms Gobbo said she also had not seen the entry until recently. "It must have been added without my knowledge. I assume it must have been added by DI Wadell," Ms Gobbo's statement to the commission said.
