Matthew Guy should know trying to outdo the left on climate policy is doomed to fail. He could and should be doing so much better, writes Gideon Rozner.

It should be easy, given Guy is up against one of the most divisive figures in the history of Australian public life.

It’s hard to see this gimmick delivering many votes to the Liberals – if for no other reason than the beneficiaries of the policy represent one of the most unionised and pro-Labor voting blocs in the country. Similarly, the spectacle of expelling upper house MP Bernie Finn over his hardline opposition to abortion may spare Guy a few awkward questions at press conferences, but will also leave an impression that the party of liberalism has been overwhelmed by cancel culture.

The demolition of the Hazelwood power station sent wholesale electricity prices soaring by 85 per cent. They are a regurgitation of familiar thought bubbles, like $1 billion towards the development of “clean hydrogen technologies” – an untested technology that is, at best, in its infancy. But this is already underway under Andrews, with regional communities furious about the upcoming construction of the Western Renewables Link transmission line project.

Not only did these promises not win Guy the election but failed to protect the Liberal Party in so-called leafy seats.
