The Victorian government has introduced a bill to establish an independent treaty authority, marking Australia’s first treaty negotiation between a government and Indigenous people.
Marcus Stewart, a First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria co-chair, said the creation of the treaty authority would ensure negotiations were not restrained by Western concepts.“This is about stepping outside the colonial system,” Mr Stewart said. “We’ve said to government, if you’re serious about treaty, you’ll do it our way, and to their credit, that’s what they’re doing. This is decolonisation in action.
“Western court systems are combative by default, whereas the treaty authority will respect our culture. The starting point will always be dialogue,” Aunty Geraldine said. This comes as Opposition Leader Peter Dutton called on the Albanese government to detail its plans for, describing the safety and prosperity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as important as constitutional recognition.
